“Ohana” and humor are key components of Mental Health Kokua’s culture. New employee interviews include being asked to tell a joke. Safety and security are stringent for all facilities- with regular training and inspections of all sites by internal and external trainers and inspectors, including the Red Cross, County Fire and Building departments, the State Department of Health, their multiple insurance companies, and their national accreditation body, the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. Understanding the need for time off, after only 3 months of employment, new staff are allowed 4 weeks vacation and 4 days of bereavement leave annually.
