Where can you find 299 motivated and content employees? The work environment is bright and pleasant. This is a company that came back from the brink after hurricane Iniki, and this return to profitability is in an environment where management and employees appreciate and value each other. The health and safety of all employees is a first priority of the company. New employees are given an orientation that includes ergonomic training that is followed up with work site checks. Workplace safety training is included in new hire orientation as well as ongoing in-service training.

Employees are awarded "wellness bucks" for good attendance, being involved in physical activities, and attending healthy life style classes. The bucks can be exchanged for movie tickets and company promotional items. A monthly Balanced Life program provides useful personal information on subjects such as personal finance, elder care, child raising, cooking classes, crafts, and other timely subjects.ees?       The company hosts an annual Employee Appreciation Day celebration. The last celebration had 275 of 299 employees attending. The CEO had steak dinners delivered to all employees who had to stay back because of 24-hr operations.

      Employees participate in a Performance Management system that includes goal setting, coaching and feedback, development planning, evaluating results, and a rewards and recognition program. There are many ways employees' outstanding performance is recognized including certificates of recognition, coupons for lunch at the cafeteria, reprinting of comments of praise and thank yous, and several levels of spot bonuses.

      There is a Profit Plus program that allows all employees to share in the company's profits. First Insurance encourages employee development. The company promotes and requires continuous learning by all employees. This is part of each employee's individual development plan.

     There is educational assistance available for both college degree programs as well as for professional development. New professional designations result in cash rewards. Ninety-eight percent of new jobs or job openings are posted internally.

      The company has an extremely low turnover rate, and liberal benefits in excess of FMLA and HFLA requirements. Vacation can be taken in hourly increments if needed for FMLA reasons. The company has a donated vacation time program to help others in case of special needs. There is an Employee Assistance Program as well as resource fairs to help employees with family needs.
