2009 HPA Annual Convention
The Hawaii Psychological Association (HPA)
November 9 & 10, 2009
Ala Moana Hotel, Honolulu, Hawaii
E komo mai!
This year's theme is
Leading Through Tough
Economic Times:
Innovation, Collaboration, and Advocacy.
This year's theme, Leading Through Tough Economic Times:
Innovation, Collaboration and Advocacy, responds to the
economic challenges that peaked last October across the
nation and have the potential to impact individuals, the
family, the workplace, the community, and society at large.
Psychologists can make a difference on multiple levels and
provide leadership in critical times; this may manifest as
innovative service delivery, practice, research, and
training models, productive collaboration both within and
beyond the domain of our own profession, and advocacy for
the profession and those we serve. Such leadership seeks to
empower change for the greater good so that tough times
become catalytic and transformative. This year’s theme has
inspired workshops covering a broad spectrum of
psychologists who will present on topics that range from
professional practice issues to the intersection of research
and service delivery to evidence-based practices for
prevalent psychological issues that appear to be on the rise
during these tough economic times.
On Tuesday, November 10th, Melba J. T. Vasquez,
Ph.D., ABPP, will address the myriad clinical and
ethical dilemmas we work with daily in our multicultural
world. Dr. Vasquez will also address obstacles in achieving
multicultural competence in psychotherapy as well as
positive strategies. In the afternoon, a local panel of
experts will join Dr. Vasquez to spotlight the challenges in
working with men specifically around the issue of rising
domestic violence in these challenging economic times.
On Monday, November 9th, B. Christopher Frueh, Ph.D. & Karen J. Cusack, Ph.D. will present a workshop in the morning on evidence-based practices for posttraumatic stress disorder or other post-traumatic reactions across a range of clinical populations and settings. A. Aukahi Austin, Ph.D. & Brad J. Nakamura, Ph.D., will present with their team in the afternoon on the evidence-based practice of exposure therapy for anxiety to include theoretical foundations, live demonstrations of basic procedures, application with special populations, as well as barriers to administration and strategies to overcome these barriers.
These CE events along with the diversity of other convention
topics should provide many opportunities to bridge the
research and clinical endeavors of our members, to bring
together students, early career and established
psychologists in various settings, identifying the common
goals that unite us as a profession.
This is not only a time to immerse yourself in the
convention’s educational content, but also to meet new
colleagues, renew old relationships and rejuvenate and
restore yourself. The presentations and events during these
two days will be at the Ala Moana Hotel.
A Town Hall Meeting with Rosemary Adam-Terem, Ph.D. (HPA
President), Jill Oliveira Gray, Ph.D. (HPA President Elect),
Brad Klontz, Psy.D. (Past President), and Craig Robinson,
Ph.D. (APA Council Representative) is scheduled for early
Monday morning. Join in this lively conversation to discuss
professional concerns you feel are most important and help
to shape the state and national agenda of psychology!
On November 9th, the winners of the Psychologically Healthy
Workplace Award (HWA) will be announced at the luncheon.
This is the 9th year that the Hawai`i Psychological
Association (HPA), in cooperation with APA, has established
the “Healthy Workplace” Awards in the State of Hawai`i.
We wish to extend our kokua to our student members. We
